Dementia and Firearm Safety

It's all about clear thinking.

Dementia, and other similar conditions of incapacity, affect clear thinking, good judgment, reduce cognition, slow reflexes, and impair the senses overall. Dexterity, fine motor skills, vison, and hearing, are all compromised. The condition can lead to delusions and hallucinations, and even paranoia.

This can adversely affect the ability of you, or a family member, being a safe and responsible firearm owner.

What can I do?

Putting family firearms into a firearm, or gun trust is a responsible way to deal with this situation before a situation of incapacity, mental or physical, becomes an issue, if ever.

It's not an anti-gun idea, quite the opposite. It's about understanding that incapacity, for what ever reason, can be dangerous. It's about avoiding accidental injury, or worse, just as one would be responsible with power tools, automobiles, and home appliances.

It's about planning to be safe.

A Firearm Trust is a living trust designed to help clients lawfully possess and transfer standard (Title 1), and  National Firearms Act (NFA or Title 2) firearms. A Firearm Trust provides advantages consistent with client goals and values, such as probate avoidance, simplified acquisition of regulated firearms, and avoidance of annual state registration fees, as well as guidance to help avoid accidental felonies when others use or are instructed to transfer a firearm via sale, gift, or bequest.
